Dallas Truvada Lawsuit Attorneys

Truvada is a popular prescription medication that can help to treat HIV-1 infections when used in combination with other medicines. Developed by Gilead Sciences, Inc., the drug has brought in billions of dollars in revenue for the company.

Unfortunately, all that glitters is not gold.

Lawsuits have begun to emerge against the pharmaceutical company with plaintiffs claiming that the use of Truvada has caused them to suffer from dangerous side effects. These harmful side effects include bone demineralization (bone loss) and kidney damage. Those harmed by the product are alleging that Gilead Sciences, Inc., failed to properly warn them about these adverse effects and also withheld a safer alternative that could have better protected their health.

Individuals with HIV are already suffering from a perilous condition; the negligent actions of this corporation have only further jeopardized their health and well-being. Let the dedicated team of Dallas Truvada lawsuit attorneys at Onder Law Firm help you to fight for the justice and financial recovery that you deserve.

About Truvada

Truvada is a once-a-day tablet meant to be used in combination with other drugs for the treatment of HIV infection. Gilead Sciences first received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2004 to sell the drug on the market for this purpose. In July 2012, the company received approval from the agency to market the drug as a preventative medication which could help to reduce the risk of sexually acquiring HIV.

Truvada is effective as the result of two components found in the drug, emtricitabine (FTC) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). These two drugs are known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and function by reducing the activity of the reverse transcriptase enzyme which helps in the replication process of HIV-infected cells.

Essentially, Truvada stops the growth of the virus.

However, in order to be effective, substantial amounts of the TDF component are required to suppress the virus – and this is where the issue lies.

What Is the Problem with Truvada?

The issues surrounding Truvada stem from the excessive amounts of TDF found in the drug. TDF has been linked to the loss of bone mineral density in HIV+ users. Considering that individuals who are HIV positive already face an increased risk of bone loss, frequent use of Truvada can exaggerate the likelihood of an individual developing osteoporosis or suffering from bone fractures.

Additionally, the large doses of TDF which must be filtered through the kidneys can also cause damage to the organ. It is believed that this, in turn, further increases bone demineralization. As a user’s kidneys are no longer able to function properly, they cannot deliver important bone-supporting minerals back into the bloodstream.

Shockingly, plaintiffs filing claims against Gilead Sciences are alleging that the company was fully aware of the devastating side effects TDF could cause and yet failed to notify them of these risks. Additionally, the company had begun to develop a safer version of the drug with a component known as tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF).

Research has shown that TAF-based medications are just as effective as TDF-based drugs but without posing the same serious health hazards to users’ bones and kidneys. Despite knowing the benefits of TAF and the disadvantages of TDF, Gilead Sciences discontinued the development of TAF products until the patent on their TDF-based Truvada came close to expiring. This ensured that they would be able to have a solid hold on the market and obtain substantial profit.

It is worth noting that Gilead Sciences, Inc., is also responsible for the development of other TDF-based anti-HIV drugs including:

  • Atripla
  • Complera
  • Stribild
  • Viread
